South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club has seen off the likes of Bondi and Cronulla to win a prestigious annual award.

The club was named Sydney Champion Surf Life Saving Club 2017/18.

South Maroubra has had a hugely successful year with its involvement in ABC’s Nippers TV show and the development of the TUI Rescue tube to name just two highlights.

“It’s a great honour,” South Maroubra SLSC president Paul Fownes said. “We have a proud history of community, participation and diversity. We encourage innovation and value the contribution of everyone in our club from the most mature to our youth.”

Mr Fownes described the club as a family and said it would continue to develop.

“Our club has been operating for nearly 60 years and maintains a special place within our community.”

It is the first time since 2010/11 South Maroubra has won the award. Maroubra SLSC won the title in 2014/15 and 2015/16.
