WORK is set to start on a new infants school after being given the green light at a crunch meeting.
The $6 million project at St Spyridon Infants School, Gardeners Rd, Kingsford, will start “as soon as possible” after the parish board signed off on the project on Wednesday.
The board had considered putting the Randwick Council-approved plans on hold to look at other options.
Parents campaigned for work on the infants school to start, forming a 500-plus signature petition. There were rumours the land was instead going to be sold off to developers.
However, the school denied this was ever the case.
“There have been strong assurances that none of the land will be developed for commercial purposes,” head of college Efrosini Stefanou-Haag said prior to the meeting. Speaking after the vote she said: “Everyone is really happy and we hope that work can start in the school holidays. It is really exciting for the school.”
The new two-storey school features general classrooms and rooms for music, art and performance. It will also feature a store room, uniform shop and two washrooms, a grassy outdoor area and undercover play area. It will cater for 370 Kindy to Year 2 pupils and 22 staff.
