Sculpture by the Sea touted for Clovelly to Maroubra walk

Spectators would better enjoy Sculpture by the Sea if it moved to the lengthy coastal walk between Clovelly and Maroubra, Randwick councillors will say in a bid to host the event.

Councillors will at a July 23 meeting discuss approaching exhibition organisers, who have vented their frustration over a footpath being laid at Marks Park, Tamarama.

The organisers say the footpath ruins some great places for art installations on the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk, and the event will not return in 2020 if the footpath is completed.

Cr Dylan Parker said neighbouring Randwick was the ideal host for the event due to its lengthy coastal walk between Clovelly and Maroubra, which is being extended.

“We’re right next door so moving or extending Australia’s largest outdoor exhibition to our community makes perfect sense,” the Labor councillor said.

Some spectators in recent years have complained of crowding at the exhibition.

The council is working on extending the walkway to La Perouse.

This would allow spectators to be more evenly spread across the event, according to Cr Parker.

The idea has support from Liberal councillors too.

Cr Harry Stavrinos said hosting the exhibition would be great for tourism and generate millions of dollars for local businesses.

“This could put Randwick on the map,” he said.

The council’s management has declined to comment.
