Final touches have been approved for the $720 million upgrade of Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick with construction now underway on the much-needed Acute Services Building.

The Acute Services Building is the main feature of the hospital’s redevelopment and will be 13-storeys tall when completed in 2022.

It will feature a new emergency department, intensive care unit, inpatient units, operating theatres, helipad and other state-of-the-art facilities.

Last month, a development application was approved by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to increase the size of the building by roughly 10 per cent, at an estimated cost of $66.7 million.

The approved 10-storey extension on the eastern side of the building will primarily be used by UNSW students and staff for medical research and education.

“The purpose (of the extension) is to enable clinical innovation and research, biomedical engineering, and research laboratories to be collocated directly alongside clinical staff,” the development proposal read.

The extension will also feature a bridge linking the new building with existing buildings at Prince of Wales Hospital.

Ground work for the new building began about 12 months ago between Botany St and Hospital Rd and construction is now underway.

In 2015, the state government announced $500 million for the redevelopment of the hospital and a further $220 million was committed in 2017.
