A historic building in Randwick which has stood for more than 150 years and was once the centre of a thoroughbred horse precinct could be redeveloped under a $2.6 million proposal.
Newmarket House, an eye-catching homestead at 7 Young St, was erected in the early 1860s and underwent extensions in the decades following.
Last week, a development application was lodged with Randwick Council to turn the heritage-listed building into a daycare centre.
The $2.6 million proposal includes plans for internal works, demolition of part of the southern wing, a large two-storey addition at the rear of the homestead, and basement parking.
“In order to accommodate the basement ramp it is proposed to demolish part of the southern wing and to sensitively rebuild to provide vehicular access,” the proposal stated.
“The proposed development comprises a part-one, part-two storey addition predominantly at the rear of the existing building.”
If approved, the daycare centre would cater for up to 91 children and 15 staff.
Newmarket House was first erected alongside horse stables in the early 1860s.
It was used as a thoroughbred sales site in the early 1900s during which time it was surrounded by an increasing number of horse stables.
The historic building is adjacent to the Newmarket development which is nearing completion and features more than 640 apartments, food outlets, retail stores, and a giant playground.
In 2018, a development application to convert Newmarket House into a private dwelling was approved but not executed.
