Documents for the approval of the cracking Mascot Towers have gone missing, according to Local Government Minister Wendy Tuckerman. Read what it means here.

'It is a dismal failure of regulation from the government'

Vital development documents for the controversial Mascot Towers have “gone missing” — as Local Government Minister Wendy Tuckerman orders an investigation into the conduct of the former Botany Bay Council.

The Local Government Minister revealed occupancy and completion certificates for the sinking towers have gone missing on Thursday.

More than 130 residents were evacuated from Mascot Towers in June, 2019 after cracking was found.

Ms Tuckerman announced the NSW Government would conduct an investigation into the former City of Botany Bay regarding Mascot Towers, with investigations probing the “conduct and performance of the council with respect to the issuing of the occupation certificate in July, 2008”.

Ms Tuckerman said the government investigation will have the power to obtain “all relevant documentation including the development application, the development consent, any other reports in support of the development application submitted to the council by the developer and original construction certificate issued by the council including the occupational certificate and all component certificates”.

“It’s important to remember that these are not just people’s homes, it’s also their life savings,” she said. “I’m advised that occupancy and completion certificates have gone missing.

“We are determined to gather as much information as possible on the issues that led to the defects in Mascot Towers.

“This type of mismanagement erodes confidence in our councils so this investigation will shine a lot on how this occurred.

It was also revealed the NSW Government would provide a 12-month extension of the Mascot Towers accommodation assistance package.

It is understood the former Botany Bay Council was the certifier for occupation and construction certificates at the time, rather than a private certifier.
