POLICE believe the brawl at a Liberal Party meeting in June may have been sparked by racial and gender bias.
Mohammed Reda was at Sutherland Local Court this morning charged with actual bodily harm, assaulting an officer in the execution of their duty and resisting an officer in the execution of their duty.
His solicitor indicated he would plead not guilty to all three counts and presiding magistrate Mr Connell adjourned the case until September 18.
Mr Reda, who wore a white polo shirt and jacket for the appearance, is an Arncliffe Aurora Football Club coach. He declined to speak to the waiting press outside the court.
Police alleged he assaulted Remone Gorgio causing actual bodily harm. They also claim he assaulted a female police officer and resisted her in the execution of her duty.
Police were called to Naji’s Café in Arncliffe on June 18 after it is alleged two warring Liberal Party factions were involved in a brawl.
On June 26 officers searched Mr Mohammed’s home at Wollongong Road, Arncliffe, in connection with the incident.
The following day the 27-year-old attended St George Police Station where he was arrested.
His court appearance follows that of Rami Abdallah who was at the same court charged with assault over the Arncliffe incident last week.
Mr Abdallah is a Liberal Party member who was attempting to stand in the inaugural Bayside Council elections.
He has also campaigned in the past for Bayside councillor Michael Nagi. The brawl happened outside Mr Nagi’s café in Arncliffe where the meeting was being held.
Mr Abdallah’s case was adjourned to appear again on August 14.
Mr Mohammed is on bail until his next appearance. As part of his conditions he must report to police every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and not contact his alleged victim, Remone Gorgio.
He must also not enter Naji’s Café in Arncliffe or go within 100 metres of the establishment.
Mr Abdallah must also not enter Naji’s Café as part of his bail conditions.
