Rami Abdallah appears in court charged with assault at the Arncliffe cafe brawl

LIBERAL Party member Rami Abdallah appeared in court today charged with assault after a brawl at an Arncliffe cafe in June.

Mr Abdallah, who is well known in political and business circles in southeast Sydney, was at Sutherland Local Court.

He was arrested by police at a property in Firth St, Arncliffe, in the weeks following the brawl and charged with common assault.

He wore a dark suit and trench coat during the short hearing.

No details of the charge against him were heard in court and he declined to speak to press after the hearing.

Magistrate J Carney adjourned the case and set a new date, August 14, for his next appearance.

Mr Abdallah, 48, is a Liberal Party member and principal at Prestige Property Group real estate firm in Arncliffe. He is the former president of Rockdale City Chamber of Commerce and has been involved in politics for a number of years.

In 2012 he stood unsuccessfully as an independent for Rockdale City Council.

It is understood he wanted to stand for Liberals in the elections for the newly formed Bayside Council but missed out on selection to Ron Bezic, who is a Liberal councillor for Bexley ward on Bayside Council.

Mr Abdallah did not stop to speak to reporters after the hearing.

It is alleged the Arncliffe meeting on June 18 descended into violence when two warring factions of the Bayside Liberals group gathered for a vote at the cafe of Bayside councillor Michael Nagi.

Mr Abdallah is a key supporter of Cr Nagi and campaigned for him at the last election.

One of the conditions of his bail is not to enter Mr Nagi’s cafe.

Police and Liberal Party investigations into the Arncliffe incident continue.
