Kensington: Charges laid over double bus crash near UNSW

Two buses carrying passengers crashed in Sydney’s southeast. One of the drivers has now been charged over the crash which ended with a passenger in hospital.

A bus driver has been charged with failing to stop at a red light following a crash involving two buses at Kensington last week which resulted with one passenger in hospital with serious head injuries.

About 4.15pm last Monday, emergency services were called to the intersection of Anzac Parade and High Street in Kensington, near UNSW, where two buses had crashed.

A 47-year-old woman, who was a passenger on one of the buses, suffered serious head injuries. She was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for treatment in a serious condition.

One of the bus drivers, a 53-year-old man, was also treated at the scene for minor leg injuries and the other bus driver, a 58-year-old man, was uninjured.

Following an investigation, the 53-year-old driver was arrested at a bus depot at Leichhardt and taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with three offences on Tuesday.

They include dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and not stop at stop line at red light.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on August 26.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said there were about 10 passengers on each bus at the time of the crash.

It had been raining heavily prior to the collision.
