Gardeners Rd: Plan to line Mascot street with apartment towers

A busy road in Mascot will soon be surrounded by apartment towers – with three new developments in the pipeline or under construction.
Last month, a development application was lodged with Bayside Council for an eight-storey apartment building to be built at 571-573 Gardeners Rd featuring 86 units.
The site was previously occupied by a retailer, Shop for Shops.
If the application is approved the stretch of Gardeners Rd will be lined with apartment buildings.
Currently, there are two apartment buildings directly to the west of the proposed development on Gardeners Rd and another tower is under construction next door to the east.
Meanwhile, development giant Meriton – which boasts a large portfolio in Mascot – has approval to build two apartment towers a few doors down (at 551-559 Gardeners Rd).
Mascot has become a development hotspot in recent years with large areas now densely built-up with apartment blocks.
The latest development application stated the area provided good access to transport in a great location.
“Given Mascot’s excellent location to access major services, shopping facilities, public transport, major roads, employment, sporting grounds, and parks it is considered an appropriate development opportunity,” the proposal reads.
“The surrounding context is undergoing transition and change from low-scale residential projects to high-density, mixed-use developments.”
The development application, lodged by a private developer, proposes to demolish existing structures at 571-573 Gardeners Rd and construct an eight-storey building with retail space, 86 residential units and two basement levels.
