A Pagewood woman has fronted court over police allegations an unrestrained baby was flung from her car during a nasty crash in Sydney’s southeast.

Elizabeth Jean Whitton, 49, from Pagewood, was arrested following the crash on Stephen Rd in Botany on January 29.

Police allege she was driving on a suspended licence in an unregistered Toyota Tarago.

Police will allege Whitton was driving the vehicle when she failed to negotiate a bend and struck the gutter, mounting the kerb before colliding with a steel fence.

Emergency services were called to the scene and treated a two-month-old baby who was allegedly unrestrained in the back seat before being ejected through a window.

Remarkably, the baby was taken to hospital for observation and was uninjured.

Police will allege five people were inside the Toyota Tarago at the time of the crash including the baby. The driver Whitton suffered a minor wrist injury but the other occupants were uninjured.

Whitton fronted Waverley Local Court on Wednesday charged with four serious offences including negligent driving, drive with passenger under six months old not fastened, use unregistered motor vehicle on road, and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended (first offence).

Her Aboriginal Legal Service lawyer asked for an adjournment until later this month.

Magistrate Mark Richardson adjourned the matter and said pleas are to be entered on the next occasion.

She will be back in court on March 17.
