Double murderer Ramzi Aouad found with knife and phone in prison cell

Ramzi Aouad was involved in one of Sydney’s most brutal gangland shootings. But despite being locked up in the notorious Long Bay jail, the now 38-year-old has managed to get his hands on a blade, phone and even a stash of drugs.

A man who is serving two life sentences for a double shooting murder was found with a knife, mobile phone and drugs in his prison cell.

Ramzi Aouad, 38, and two others – Adnan Darwiche and Nasaem El-Zeyat – sprayed more than 50 bullets into a Greenacre home killing a mother of two, Mervat Nemra, and her husband’s friend Ziad Razzak in October 2003.

He is currently serving the life sentences without the possibility of parole at Long Bay jail in Malabar.

On Monday July 15 security at Long Bay prison conducted searches of cells and inmates.

“During this time, cell 20, in which the accused was housed alone, was subjected to a search,” Waverley Local Court heard on Wednesday.

A sandwich press and fan were discovered inside Aouad’s cell containing hidden contraband.

Inside the sandwich press, security found a 20cm foldable knife as well as a mobile phone, SIM card and charging cable.

Inside the fan, security found 36 tablets of estrogen blockers and two containers with anabolic steroids. Aouad did not have a prescription for the drugs.

The items were seized and police later charged him with four offences including possess offensive weapon or instrument in place of detention and use or possess mobile phone in place of detention.

He has been given a nine-month prison sentence for the latest charges.

He appeared in Waverley Local Court on Wednesday via audiovisual link and was convicted on all four charges and sentenced to a nine-month prison term.

Magistrate Allison Hawkins said while that would not add further time to his existing sentence, it would help him reflect on the seriousness of his offences.

His defence also said that Corrective Services NSW had disciplined him within the prison.

The killings, for which he was originally convicted for, were part of a long-running war between two rival families.

All three men were each sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in 2006 for the murders, while their driver was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years behind bars.

Aouad was also sentenced over a third murder relating to a shooting at a petrol station in Punchbowl in 2003 but that sentence was quashed following an appeal.
