A negligent driver who left Sydney Roosters great Ian Schubert needing three surgeries to save his leg has been banned from the roads for 18 months.

Perpetual Dzikunu, 30, smashed into the footy star – who is affectionately known as Shoey – on September 1 as he was riding his Harley Davidson.

Schubert is better known in recent years for acting as auditor for the NRL’s salary cap and in particular investigating Melbourne Storm.

The 1975 grand final hero was flung from the motorcycle and his foot was left partially detached from his leg with three arteries severed.

He spent four weeks in hospital and underwent three surgeries to save his lower left leg from amputation.

While his leg has been saved, he has two rods in his ankle holding him together.

Ghanaian national Dzikunu had been pulling out of her workplace driveway onto King St, Randwick, at the time.

She was sentenced at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday for negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, after she pleaded guilty to the charge last month.

She was disqualified from holding a driver’s licence for 18 months, convicted and placed on a community correction order for two years.

Schubert was still a teenager when he played in the Roosters’ grand final-winning season of 1975, playing at fullback. He also won man of the match in the final that year. The agreed facts stated she was pulling out of a nursing home driveway where she worked in her Toyota when the crash happened.

She started to turn onto the road and collected Mr Schubert who was travelling about 40km/h in the middle of the eastbound lane.

“He tried to swerve to the right into the westbound lane to avoid a collision however the front nearside corner of the accused’s vehicle collided directly with Schubert’s lower left leg causing him to be ejected from the motorcycle and severely injure his lower left leg,” the agreed facts read.

Dzikunu, from Riverwood, has been living in Australia for about three years on a graduate visa and has been working part-time at Montefiore nursing home in Randwick.

She holds a Ghanaian international licence and has never held a NSW licence.
