IT’S the day when Sydneysiders are putting the daily grind on pause to do something for the community at large.
#DoSomething Day is here so now’s the time to ask yourself: “What can I do to help out someone in need or do my part for the city today?”
This morning NewsLocal employees and Your Local Club staff joined in the Centennial Parklands bush regeneration program, clearing weeds and planting native trees along Guriwal Trail.

The park’s volunteer co-ordinator Murray Gibbs said preparing the 10,000 sqm section was a big task and had to be done by hand because chemical removal was not an option.
“We’re obviously focused on being environmentally friendly … so we bring in groups and have a good go of getting rid of the weeds.”
The weeds thrive in the climate, outcompeting native species and stripping the soil of nutrients.
Mr Gibbs said the area would eventually be part of kid’s education program on Australian flora and fauna.
“The idea is to grow Australian native plants, bush tucker plants, that’s what this site is all about.”
NewsLocal Publisher John McGourty led the group and said it was a pleasure to lend a hand for his favourite park.
“Centennial Park gives me so much pleasure so it was great to be able to give something back as part of DoSomething Day,” he said.
“I’m so lucky that it’s my local park and I get to spend time there every day either jogging, cycling or walking the dog. I love it early in the morning just as the sun’s coming up.”
Your Local Club’s Ben Alcantara said it was a great day out of the office.
“It’s a great community initiative, especially because it’s assisting with a kid’s education program.”
An initiative of the DoSomething Foundation, NewsLocal and Your Local Club, DoSomething Day seeks to celebrate our volunteers and highlight those who are giving back by spreading kindness in their community.
