Two workers at a Maroubra leisure centre are among the latest cases as the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in the Randwick Council area has risen to 71.

Two staff who work at the council-operated Des Renford Leisure Centre in Maroubra have tested positive.

The popular aquatic centre was closed on March 23 to the public and the pair were infected after that date “from a diagnosed close contact outside of council operations”.

“This means there is no risk of infection to users or members of DRLC and no need for members of the public who may have visited the centre prior to its closure to be tested,” the council said in a statement.

“We are working with the two employees to support them during this difficult time and our thoughts are with them for a swift recovery.”

As a precaution, the council conducted a deep clean of the facility over the weekend.

“While the centre has been closed to the public, staff have still been working at the centre,” a council spokesman said.
