You’re never too young to save a life.

It’s definitely the case for these two brave girls.

Coogee Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Rescue Certificate graduates Amelie Filippi and Ginevra Aiello, 13, put their skills to the test over the Christmas holidays when a woman became distressed off Freshwater.

Ginevra told The Southern Courier what happened: “On December 28 I was having a fantastic day with my family and friend Amelie.

“We were getting ready to leave, when we decided to go for a quick last surf, while in the water we spotted a middle age woman struggling to keep herself above the water.

“I immediately, without hesitation, swam towards her without taking my eyes off her. Amelie, who was a bit further away, saw me and quickly took action and swam over to help.

She said the woman began to panic and although her husband was beside her, he didn’t have the ability to help.

“Using our lifesaving skills we made sure we were reassuring her while wrapping our hands around her waist carrying her to shore, (meanwhile) Amelie shouted to a stronger man beside us to help carry her.

How to spot a rip

“People don’t understand how dangerous and life-threatening it can be to swim outside the flags especially if you’re not a strong swimmer. We were trained for weeks to help our community but until it comes to the real scenario this is when you finally realise how to face the reality.”

The girls said the experience showed them the value of the eight-week surf rescue course and the nippers program.
