Carnival activities and surfing’s rising stars are expected to attract thousands of people to Maroubra Beach from Friday for three days of festivities.

Top junior surfers will be the first attraction when they contest the three day NSW Grommet State Titles, which begins on Friday.

Organisers will have games on the sand for spectators each day, and a beach clean-up on Saturday.

The busiest day will be Sunday, when the finals are held alongside the annual Beach Breaks Carnival.

The Beach Breaks festival has attracted plenty of people in recent years.

The surf culture carnival will offer amusement rides, musicians, games and market stalls and has been a drawcard for families for years.

The art of surfboard airbrushing will also be on show when the activities begin at 12pm.

There will also be honours for those who have achieved great success in the surf.

Organisers from Randwick Council will add the names of two more surf legends to bronze plaques in the Surfing Walk of Fame on the promenade from 1pm.

Champion ironwoman Karla Gilbert and surfing great Nat Young are among those whose names adorn the walk.

Triple ironman champion Barry Rodgers, who lived at Maroubra, will have a section of the park along Marine Pde named after him.

Randwick Mayor Kathy Neilson said Rodgers won six national surf lifesaving titles and 11 state ones.

“He was a true master of the surf,” she said.

“We’re glad to be able to remember a pioneer of surf lifesaving and three-time ironman in this way.”
