Amie, Tamera Bonanno to be sentenced for attack on Clara Khamiss

When two sisters stormed the bedroom of an ex they found his new flame cowering in just her underwear and a singlet. What allegedly happened next has been played out in court.

How did COVID-19 lower crime rates?

A frightening home invasion in Sydney’s south allegedly descended into madness when two sisters confronted the new lover of an ex-boyfriend cowering in the bedroom.

Amie and Tamera Bonanno, aged 31 and 24, have pleaded guilty to their roles in the violent break-and-enter of the Botany home of the older sister’s former partner in the early hours of March 21 last year.

The court heard the women, joined by two men allegedly armed with knives and a meat cleaver, kicked down the door of the sixth floor unit and found the new girlfriend Clara Khamiss cowering inside a bedroom in just her underwear and a singlet.

Ms Khamiss gave evidence at a hearing before Sydney District Court on Wednesday she had enjoyed a Friday night in with her new man David, involving pizza, a six pack of beer and a movie, before being woken up loud banging about 4.30am.

The young woman heard David go to the front of the unit and say “Oh, it’s you. What the f*** do you want.”

The front door and bedroom door was kicked in by the armed intruders with Ms Khamiss telling the court she heard a man say “where are the drugs” as she hid in the bedroom.

She was relieved to see David’s ex-girlfriend Amie Bonanno enter the room, saying they knew each other through a mutual friend and were on good terms.

However, Ms Khamiss told the court Bonanno said; “It’s you, I knew it … girl to girl how could you do this to me, you could’ve just told me you were dating.”

Video footage of Amie Bonanno’s police interview revealed she had suspected David had been unfaithful after he met Ms Khamiss at yoga while they were dating.

“I made contact with her through Instagram, this is while David and I were together, and she denied anything had happened,” Amie Bonanno told a police officer. “I clearly asked, girl to girl, if something was going on and she denied it.”

Ms Khamiss told the court she was wildly assaulted by Amie Bonanno, giving evidence the home invader threw portable charges, beer bottles and shoes before punching, kicking and pulling her hair like a rag doll. The disputed facts hearing heard Amie Bonanno denies this version of events.

The court was told the younger Bonanno also attacked the young woman during the home invasion, punching Ms Khamiss to the face, which isn’t disputed as she has no recollection of the events inside the unit.

Ms Khamiss said she didn’t fight back when attacked by the women because she feared she would be raped by the male intruders.

During cross examination by Amie Bonanno’s barrister Stephen Dayeian, Ms Khamiss said she was “underestimating” her version of events.

“I’m more than happy to take these people down with a smile on my face,” she said on another occasion.

Both women have pleaded guilty to aggravated break and enter. The disputed facts hearing will continue later this month.
