EASTLAKES is set to be transformed with the building of a new $1 billion residential and entertainment quarter.
The first images of Eastlakes Live, which will be built on the site of Eastlakes Shopping Centre, were released last week.
Developers Crown Group said it would have 534 high-end apartments on top of a new shopping centre.
It will be built in stages. The first stage, featuring 134 units and 12 shops, should be completed by 2020. They will go on sale in June.
The chief executive of Crown Group, Iwan Sunito, said it would be a new entertainment and lifestyle precinct for Sydney.
The development has been a long time in the making, having received planning approval back in 2013.
However, Botany council challenged the decision in the Land and Environment Court.
The then mayor Ben Keneally described it as poor planning and said there was inadequate public transport. But the council’s appeal was thrown out in 2015.
The Crown Group has kept quiet about the scheme before releasing artist impressions last week.
The development is bordered by Barber Ave to the south and east with Eastlakes Reserve to the west. It extends over Evans Ave to the north and goes up to Gardeners Rd.
The 534 apartments will be in several blocks up to six storeys high. A basement carpark will have space for 916 vehicles.
As well as supermarkets there will be cafes, a restaurant promenade, medical centre and other shops.
There will also be public gardens and a swimming pool for residents. Sydney-based architect firm fjmt is behind the scheme.
“When complete expect the development to be embraced by the broader Sydney community and become a leisure, food and shopping destination in its own right,” principal architect Richard Francis-Jones said.
There is currently no date for the completion of the entire scheme.
