Lebanese Muslim Association to hold seminar on Islamic beliefs and practices in Australia
The Lebanese Muslim Association is holding an information session in Lakemba to explore Islamic beliefs and practices in contemporary Australian society.
A FREE information session in Lakemba will explore Islamic beliefs and practices in contemporary Australian society.
The session is run by the Lebanese Muslim Association and aims to help those who work in organisations within the Muslim community become more culturally sensitive.
LAKEMBA COMMUNITY LEADERS UNITE TO SUPPORT THEIR SUBURB
Project manager Aftab Malik is one of the presenters for the one-day course, and said he hoped to provide practical information about the Islamic faith.
“It is effectively trying to provide a crash course in culture and religion,” he said. “The Muslim community in Lakemba, Bankstown, Auburn and Liverpool is comprised of Muslims from different ethnicities.”
“The idea is to equip individuals whose clientele is made up of a large proportion of Muslims with culture sensitivities.”
The association has run the seminar twice before and always ended up with a long waiting list of people keen to attend the course.
People of all education levels still relied on the media for their understanding of Islamic culture, Mr Malik said.
LEBANESE MUSLIM ASSOCIATION RECEIVE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT GRANTS
Last month, The Express looked at how suburbs with large Muslim communities, such as Lakemba, were portrayed unfairly.
“The session is quite vast, from education to social care to youth involvement,” Mr Malik said.
The session is on September 23 from 9.30am to 5pm at the Lebanese Muslim Association's grand function hall in Lakemba.
