FAIRFIELD ADVANCE: Fairfield's Young Citizen of the Year, Basim Shamoan was described by Deputy Mayor George Barcha as the boy who is everywhere and last night his efforts were recognised.

THIS year's Young Citizen of the Year, Basim Shamaon, was described by Fairfield's Deputy Mayor George Barcha as a young man who is literally everywhere in the community.

And as he volunteers for more than 20 charities and organisations it is no surprise Mr Barcha had seen him around.

"I was especially pleased to win this award this year because I was told it was really competitive," 23 year-old Basim, who lives in Bossley Park said.

"But finally I had the luck."

Basim has not just been going along to volunteer he has also been actively raising donations for charities which include the Red Cross and Youth of the Street.

"The charities were really surprised when a young person came in wanting to help," he said.

In terms of what drove him to do all this charitable work Basim said it was just underpinned by his moral conscience.

"It's not that hard to give up your time," he said.

"And it's good to do some work for each other on top of our own work."

Currently Basim is working towards completing his Masters of Arts at the University of Western Sydney and he is specialising teaching English as a second language.

"At the moment I just want to complete my masters so I can help migrants learn how to speak English," he said.
