WILLIAM Clarke College always goes far and beyond in its fundraising efforts for the annual 40-Hour Famine to help World Vision reach out to the less fortunate.

The Kellyville school raised more than $91,000 during this year’s campaign to become the highest fundraising school in Australia for 40 Hour Famine for the second-year-in-a-row.

World Vision’s regional engagement manager Ben White presented the school with their award last week, following the tremendous efforts of the 125 students from Years 5 to 12.

For school captain Tom McDowall, the end result was helping the less fortunate and not raising the most money.

“Getting the highest amount of money (in Australia) is not the main focus, though it its rewarding that the school has achieved it,” the Year 12 student said.

“Our main focus was to help people in need as doing the 40-hour fast showed how lucky we are compared to many people in developing countries.

“This year the focus of World Vision is Bangladesh and we are trying to help these people in every little way.”

William Clarke College has a fantastic track record in the 40 Hour Famine, raising nearly half a million dollars since 2005.

In 2014, Year 8 student Grace Jenman raised a whopping $20,000 on her own and was personally honoured by World Vision Australian head Tim Costello.

“Giving up the food this year was tough, specially when I tried to sleep,” said Tom, who gave up access to technology and furniture in his previous two campaigns.

“But we did it only for a short time unlike others who have to face this every day.

“We also raised money through a riff challenge between the teachers and the students and a barbecue.”

Individually, students raised money through their family and friends.
