A teenage boy has lost his thumb in a freak accident during a TAFE class in Sydney’s north west.
The 18-year-old carpentry student at Nirimba TAFE had his thumb “sliced cleanly off” by a drop saw when it became caught on Thursday afternoon.
The carpentry student was treated by CareFlight and taken to Westmead Hospital after the Rapid Response Helicopter received a callout of the accident around 2.24pm.
“According to witnesses, the teenager was using a drop saw in a classroom when his left thumb became caught up in the saw, slicing his thumb cleanly off in the process,” a CareFlight spokesman said.
“CareFlight’s specialist doctor and critical care paramedic assessed the teenager before giving him pain relief.”
The 18-year-old was taken to Westmead Hospital by road ambulance in a stable condition.
