A WOMAN has died after collapsing next to a pool at Blacktown Leisure Centre Stanhope despite “exceptional” work by staff to resuscitate her.
The 68-year-old woman was helped from the centre’s 25m pool in Stanhope Gardens by staff just before midday yesterday, after complaining about feeling unwell.
NSW Ambulance said she collapsed next to the pool and went into cardiac arrest.
Staff performed CPR and used the centre’s defibrillator to try and resuscitate her.
Paramedics arrived shortly after and spent a further 30 minutes trying to resuscitate the woman. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
NSW Ambulance Inspector Andrew McAlpine — who was at the pool earlier the same day — said the aquatic centre staff did a great job trying to resuscitate her.
“The staff were exceptional and they followed resuscitation guidelines perfectly,” he said.
The aquatics side of the centre was closed following the incident and reopened this morning.
A Blacktown City Council spokesman said the woman was using the 25m pool when the incident happened.
“Staff entered the pool and removed the patron from the water,” the spokesman said.
“Staff performed CPR and the centre’s defibrillator was used before paramedics arrived at the centre.
“Paramedics continued CPR on site however the patron was unable to be revived.”
