ELLA Buchanan is a rare multi-talented youngster who can excel in three different sports at the same time without being stressed about it.
The 12 year-old Rouse Hill local has won selection for NSW’s football, netball and athletics in her age group, somehow finding the time to train and compete in the vastly different disciplines.
Nominated for the Junior Sports Star Award — proudly sponsored by Rebel — Ella is keen to enjoy her events without thinking of any long-term goals in a particular sport.
“It feels amazing that I was able to be an accomplished athlete in three disciplines,” Ella said.
“Making it to nationals in three different sports was one of my goals for this year.
“I was also trying for the NSW touch football team but the state carnival clashed with the national soccer carnival so I couldn’t go.
“I spend each day doing some sort of sports activity, it means that I don’t get to go to many birthday parties or sleepovers.”
Ella said she is surprised at having made the nationals for the three sports, in particular thrilled that she finally made the athletics state team.
“Yes I was surprised, because there are really amazing and deserving athletes in all three sports, but I have been working really hard in all these sports so it felt good when it paid off,” Ella said.
“I don’t want to have to concentrate on only one sport in the future and my overall goal is to keep competing in as many as I can until I have to choose.
“I am lucky that my coaches in all the sports are willing to try and help me achieve my goals and work with each other to do this.”
“My long term goals and plans are to represent Australia in as many of these three sports as I can. I am aiming for more than one.
Her achievements this year include:
Netball
■ Starred for the unbeaten Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association U12 team which won the state age championship
■ Captain and Player’s Player for the undefeated Sydney West primary netballs school team which won the NSW PSSA championship
■ Helped the NSW PSSA team take second spot in the School Sport Australia Championships
Football
■ Awarded NSW coaches’ award for her versatility and achievement while helping the PSSA team finish second in the School Sport Australia Championships in Perth
Athletics
■ Champion in the school, zone and region age events in athletics and cross country.
■ Won and broke records in the school and zone 100m, 200m and 800m.
■ Second in the 200m, 800m and third in 100m at the NSW PSSA athletics carnival
Selected in the NSW PSSA athletics team to compete at the School Sport Australia carnival
■ Nominations have now closed for the Junior Sports Star
