COURTNEY Nevin’s stock in football is rising dramatically with 2016 being her breakthrough year.
This week’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star Award — proudly sponsored by Rebel — has grabbed her sporting opportunities with both hands to catch the eye of national selectors.
Courtney, 14, who attends the Westfields Sports High School, has had such a memorable year, that she herself could find it hard to believe.
The Mulgrave teenager not only helped Australia’s under 17 team win their World Cup qualifying tournament in Vietnam but was also the second top scorer in the competition with 10 goals.
“This is the first time I had played for the Australian under-17 team and I was delighted to play in all five games,” Courtney said.
“It was fantastic and a great experience for me in what was my biggest tournament to date.
“I am looking forward to the World Cup and I hope I get picked for the team.”
Courtney, whose role model is Matildas star Lisa De Vanna, was the youngest to be chosen for the NSW national training squad.
She has also made the NSW futsal team while being a member of the Football NSW high performance squad for three years.
This year’s credits include representing the Football NSW reserve and first grade teams, a Combined High School team, national training squad all stars select team in addition to training with the Western Sydney Wanderers squad.
“Being a part of the NSW high performance squad has improved my skills a lot,” Courtney said.
“It has helped me technically while showing me how games are played.”
