More than 30 years of service to football in the Blacktown district has been honoured at the Blacktown District Soccer Football Association’s 40th anniversary dinner with Michael Hawthorne taking out the prestigious BDSFA association award.

The 50-year-old from Quakers Hill beat some esteemed and dedicated competition to receive the award which was created to recognise contribution to the game of football in the area.

“I was very, very humbled,” Hawthorne said.

“It came as a big surprise. I’m still a bit taken aback by it to be honest.”

Hawthorne has been coaching in and around the Blacktown district since he was 14, winning multiple premierships across all levels of the game for Quakers Hill Junior Soccer Club, Blacktown Spartans FC and Riverstone Schofields Junior Soccer Club.

Since 2012 he has also served as the NSW coach education co-ordinator for Blacktown.

Hawthorne is currently the technical director for Riverstone Schofields.

Club president Mary Teuma said there was nobody more deserving of the award.

“The level and amount of stuff he has done in football is way beyond anyone I can think of,” she said.

“It’s a thankless job and he does it all for the love of the game.

“He’s done so much … this recognition is well overdue.”
