Glenwood’s Jeshurun Pillay has plenty to play for in promising golfing career

JESHURUN Pillay used to follow his dad on the golfing course when he was a child and unsurprisingly took up the sport when he turned six.

JESHURUN Pillay used to follow his dad on the golfing course when he was a child and unsurprisingly took up the sport when he turned six.

Now the 13-year-old Glenwood High School student is even eyeing a pro career in golf, enjoying the limitless room for individual flair and skills in the sport.

Jeshurun has been picking up trophies and awards with his latest win coming at Sydney West Golf Championships under-15 division at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club, Colebee — where he plays regularly.

Jeshurun is this week’s nominee for the Junior Sports Star Award and is keen to pursue his golfing career, even dropping drumming, to concentrate more on the sport.

“I used to go with my dad to the golf course and after trying it out, I liked it,” Jeshurn said. “I like it as it’s an individual sport and you don’t have to worry about others.

“If you stuff it up, it is up to you to do well.

“I think the mental part is the hardest for me. Regarding my game, I think the best part are my approach shots.”

The Western Sydney Primary School representative, also plays basketball and volleyball for his school.

“I would like, hopefully, to turn pro and in the short term, to be selected for bigger tournaments,” said Jeshurun, who has picked up tips from the Jack Newton Foundation.

The Local Sports Stars program is searching for outstanding athletes aged under 18, as well as those that love and contribute to making sport a great experience for everyone.

We also want to celebrate the parents, coaches and volunteers that help make it all possible.

The program has five categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual, Young Sporting Spirit Team and Service to Sport
