JOSHUA Brodie was crowned the Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star of 2016 at the annual NewsLocal sports award nights at WatervieW, Sydney Olympic Park, on Wednesday night.
The talented Rouse Hill local, who captured two Australian junior cycling titles during a successful year, was unable to attend the awards ceremony as he is competing in the national track championships in Sydney.
The award was accepted on his behalf by the editor of Rouse Hill Times John Bilic.
Brodie said he was “amazed” when he was honoured with the 2016 Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star Award.
The 14-year-old Rouse Hill rider’s phenomenal 2016 season included two Australian age group titles and Cycling NSW’s prestigious Cyclist Of The Year Award for under-15, for having the highest overall points at state and national titles in the track and road seasons.
Joshua celebrated the JSS Award with an under-17 team pursuit bronze medal at the Australian Track Cycling Championships in Sydney last week, which meant he was unable to pick up his prize during the cerem
ony last Wednesday.
“I was pretty amazed and very excited and it was a surprise, considering the high calibre of athletes in this local area,” Joshua said.
On his success at the 2017 nationals, Joshua said: “This was my first hitout as an under-17s rider at track nationals and this is a big step up to compete with the big boys.”
Joshua produced a personal best in the sprints where he qualified 12th before competing in the keirin (semi-final), team sprints (fifth) and the 30-lap scratch race where he finished an impressive fifth. His efforts helped NSW capture the overall state team title.
“My success wouldn’t be possible without the support of my coach Mick Kejda, the Western Sydney Academy of Sport, the MTOSS Racing and the Parramatta Cycling club,” he said.
Joshua attends Rouse Hill Anglican College.
Rising goalkeeper Nichloas Suman capped a stellar year as one of the first choices for the Western Sydney Wanderers National Youth League team by taking out the Young Sporting Spirit Award.
The Beaumont Hills teenager is highly regarded by the Wanderers who have also drafted him in the Hyundai A-League squad.
The Arndell Anglican College student, who turned 17 on Tuesday, began playing football when he was four. An injury to the regular goalkeeper led to him switching from being a forward to goalie.
“My long-term goals are to play professionally and play overseas,” said the lanky Beaumont Hills teenager, who has represented Australia.
Wanderers NYL coach Trevor Morgan said Nicholas has the potential to play at a professional level. “Nicholas is young, has excellent potential and is beginning to take steps towards a professional career,” Morgan said.
“He has represented his country at youth level but, more importantly, has worked hard under our goalkeeper coaches to improve to the point where he trains regularly with the Hyundai A-League team.
“He is developing physically and mentally and is continuing to learn about the game and to analyse himself and the senior goalkeepers at the club.”
Nicholas previously played for Colo Cougars, Nepean FC, Sydney United and FNSW Institute before joining the Wanderers for the 2015/16 season, making his debut as a 15-year-old against Newcastle Jets.
The Hills baseball team, which progressed further than any Australian team at the 2016 Little League World Series, won the NewsLocal Team Spirit of the Year. They were among the several outstanding JSS nominees featured in the Rouse Hill Times.
Maltidas star and Parramatta Advertiser nominee, Ellie Carpenter was crowned the NewsLocal’s Junior Sports Star, after becoming the youngest female footballer to compete at an Olympic Games when she played in Rio de Janeiro.
Patrick Gleeson, another featured athlete in the Rouse Hill Times, lifted as the Blacktown Advocate Young Sporting Spirit Award while local gymnast and former Rouse Hill Times winner, Kira Ward was the winner for the Hills Shire Times.
Adam Peacock from Fox Sports was the MC during the night which honoured leading young athletes across all our mastheads
