BEFORE you know it, the Sydney Metro Northwest trains will be running between Rouse Hill and the city, slashing travel times and changing the way people move around the state.
That’s the promise of Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport Minister Andrew Constance, who walked on the deck of the Skytrain bridge over Rouse Hill to meet project workers on Monday morning.
The $8.3 billion Sydney Metro Northwest rail link will have eight stations in the Hills and Rouse Hill.
“This is a critical milestone in delivering a 21st-century railway system to greater Sydney,” Ms Berejiklian said on the Anzac Bridge-inspired Skytrain landmark over Windsor Rd.
Mr Constance said: “Before you know it, a new metro train will be running here every four minutes in the peak in each direction, bringing reliable metro rail to this region — and Australia — for the first time.”
The 270m Skytrain is the first cable-stayed railway bridge on a curve built in Australia and is made of 88 huge concrete segments each weighing between 70 and 140 tonnes.
The twin 45m bridge towers and steel cables will be installed over the coming months.
Stage one of Sydney Metro — the Sydney Metro Northwest project — is set to open in the first half of 2019.
Stage two, which extends the rail from the northwest under Sydney Harbour into the CBD and beyond, is due for completion by 2024.
