JASPER the “gorgeous rabbit” has become the 5000th adoption from RSPCA’s Rouse Hill Care Centre, an astonishing milestone for the rescue organisation in just eight years.
The store opened at the Rouse Hill Town Centre in 2009 and has become one of the leaders in the area to take in and rehome abandoned or unwanted pets.
It was Jasper’s lucky day because he had been handed over only two hours before with RSPCA Care Centre manager Jill Wood saying, it was one of the quickest adoptions.
Castle Hill resident Kathryn Cox had no idea she was adopting the 5000th animal from the centre when she and her mum Hanne decided to take home Jasper last Thursday.
“Our family has always loved animals and I have been an advocate for animal rights,” Ms Cox said.
“I wanted to adopt a rabbit since a year ago but with our two dogs, I was unable to.
“We had no idea Jasper was the 5000th pet to be adopted so it makes it extra special as he is a gorgeous rabbit.
“I have bought him toys and a brush and will take him with me when I move on my own.”
Ms Wood, who worked with RSPCA in England before joining the Rouse Hill centre in 2011, said she is proud of her staff and volunteers.
“We were so happy to get our 5000th adoption as Jasper had arrived from our shelter at Yagoona for a couple of hours when Kathryn came in to see him with her mum,” Ms Wood said.
“They had a chat with (staffer) Carmen (Stephens) and then cuddled Jasper before deciding to take him.
“We do get attached to our animals specially those who have been with us for a few weeks.
“We are happy when they are adopted but get a bit emotional as we know their characters, even the guinea pigs who squeal when they hear our voices or see us.
“When we see animals down in the dumps, we give them hugs.
“Following Jasper, we were also fortunate that two male cats from the same family were adopted after being with us for a couple of weeks.”
During a regular week, the centre can have 30 kittens, six adult cats, five dogs and several small animals, including rabbits and guinea pigs.
During certain times of the year, the Rouse Hill centre will have special offers for their cats and kittens, sometimes even waiving fees.
