MATHEMATICS is hardly a fun subject for many students but it is all changing at Riverstone High School on March 14.

That’s when the numbers align for one of mathematics’ famous symbols, Pi, which is the symbol for the Greek letter π.

For Bryson McMillen, the head teacher for mathematics at Riverstone High School, the day is so special he has created a day of activities to celebrate the uniqueness of the date.

Pi Day will be a huge event for Riverstone High School students who pose for this Greek symbol.

“It is celebrated around the world as Pi Day (3/14),” McMillen explained.

“The Greek letter π is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

“It something we thought will be a lot of fun for the whole school to enjoy.

“Activities include visual art, poetry and recital competitions, all revolving around the Pi sign.”

McMillen, who has been with Riverstone High for more than eight years, is enthusiastic about his mathematics and thinks its time the students too enjoy the subject.

“There are so many different things going in school and I thought that maths also had to have a go,” McMillen said.

He got the ball rolling and the whole school on the bandwagon, with the students photographed as a pi symbol (pictured above).

“The whole day is pretty much fun and the program starts with the school assembly at 10am followed by the competitions,’ McMillen said.

“At Riverstone High school we always think outside the box and this case thinking circles, Pi to be exact.

“Having students excited and engaged in learning activities is the key to promoting student achievement.

“We plan to print Pi shirts for the teachers and also something with the symbol as gifts for the winners.”

Food is also on the Pi menu with the school selling pi (es) and a drink for $3.14.
