MORE maximum security prisoners will be housed at the Parklea Correctional Centre as the NSW Government confirmed plans to add 500 beds to the already announced 150-bed expansion.

The privately-run centre already houses maximum security prisoners and is expected to take in their new inmates from 2019.

The 150-bed expansion, begun earlier this year, is expected to be ready late 2017.

The expansion at Parklea, which can accommodate more than 900 prisoners, is part of the Government’s $3.8 billion plans to add 7,000 new beds in the correctional system in NSW.

Minister for Corrections David Elliott said the expansion will help cope with the rise in the prison population statewide.

“This project is part of reforms that will help deliver a prison system that accommodates more inmates, operates more efficiently, and has a greater focus on rehabilitation, without compromising safety and security,” Mr Elliott said.

“The extension for maximum-security inmates will be built to contemporary standards, making it safe and secure for staff and inmates.”

Mr Elliott said it will also create up to 250 jobs during construction and 160 new jobs when operational.

According to Corrective Services NSW Commissioner Peter Severin, the Parklea centre is “ideally located to meet the demand for greater corrective services capacity in metropolitan Sydney”.

The Parklea centre is situated on Sentry Drive.

The NSW Government said it also building a new 1700-bed facility in Grafton.
