Rouse Hill: $89m data centre to neighbour homes

It is a massive computer IT centre that would neighbour hundreds of homes in Sydney’s northwest. See the plans and where the 50,000sq m facility could be built.

Hundreds of residents in Mile End Rd, Rouse Hill, could soon be living next to a massive data computer facility that will operate 24 hours a day.

The $89 million development application, submitted to The Hills Shire Council on December 23 by applicant TJ Mile, earmarks the construction of a 50,000sq m computer housing system made up of 17 data halls at 24 to 26 Mile End Rd.

The development application comes just months after residents fought to prevent a massive HillsBus depot from being built on the same road.

A planner for the applicant said the 50,874sq m facility would be 22m in height - or four storeys - and would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Despite the massive data halls proposed for the site the planner argued the building footprint “has been minimised” to retain bushland surrounding the site.

“The proposal will develop the vacant land for a use that will be sensitive to the surrounding residential properties and will minimise its impact on the bushland setting,” the planner said.

A total of 20 staff will be onsite 24 hours a day including six office staff, 12 technical staff and two security staff, according to the development application for the site.

“A data centre is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as telecommunications and data storage systems,” the planner said.

“As IT operations become increasingly important to the day to day operations of most businesses, the security and reliability of these systems becomes a critical risk to the successful running of a business.

“Should these IT systems fail, the operations of a company may be stopped completely at a significant cost to the operator.”

The data centre will provide physical infrastructure and storage for IT systems as well as back-up power supplies and security for computer systems.

The proposal will include 64 car spaces and the removal of trees for the development of the site.
