KELLYVILLE RIDGE trampolinist Liam Christie will head to the nationals in Melbourne with plenty at stake.

Not only is he looking to add to his impressive medal haul from last year of three gold medals, but he will also vye for a spot at the Youth Olympics.

The 2018 Australian gymnastics championships started last week.

The trampoline events at nationals will be staged this week.

Liam, 16, from Cherrybrook Technology High School, is hoping to win gold in the junior elite division (under-19) for individual trampoline, double mini trampoline and synchronised trampoline.

His mum Annemarie Christie said nationals doubled as a qualifier for the Youth Olympics in Argentina in October.

She said that meant there was extra focus on the individual trampoline event offered at the Youth Olympics.

“He has got to win nationals (in that event) and perform better than the New Zealanders. They will only send one male athlete from Oceania,” she said.

Recently, Liam travelled to a big tournament in Colombia where he won two bronze medals against stiff competition.

“He was stoked with that. It gave him a taste of what it is like to win medals internationally,” Mrs Christie said.

His biggest event — the individual trampoline — will be staged on Friday.

Liam trains at the Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre in Rooty Hill five days a week.
