It has only taken 18 months for Georgia Hulley to cement herself as one of Australia’s best young pole vaulters.

The 18 year-old from Rouse Hill picked up the sport at the end of 2016 and is already the NSW under-20 state champion. Her personal best of 3.40m ranks her fifth in the country for that age group.

After finishing eighth at the 2018 Junior National Championships, Georgia was selected in the NSW Target Talent Program- one of only two female pole vaulters to earn selection in the elite athlete development initiative.

“I first got into pole vault as a friend suggested to me that I should try it as I was an ex-gymnast and apparently gymnasts made good pole vaulters,” Georgia said.

“So I just went to one session, gave it a go one day and immediately realised that this was my sport.”

Georgia is also the sister of Commonwealth Games silver medal winning hammer thrower Alex Hulley, who she says is a huge inspiration for her.

“Her success makes me believe that anything can be possible with hard work and perseverance.

“She motivates me to give my all and I have high hopes that one day I can be as successful as she is.”

Georgia is the latest nominee for the Rouse Hill Times Local Sports Stars award, which are on until August 31. Prizes will be awarded to athletes aged 18 and under across four categories: Junior Sports Star Individual, Junior Sports Star Team, Young Sporting Spirit Individual and Young Sporting Spirit Team. There is also a Service To Sport category.
