KFC drive through only: Kellyville Ridge pitched as first Sydney store

With COVID-19 forcing restaurants to close their doors, fast food giant KFC has unveiled plans for Sydney’s first drive-through only outlet, meaning fried chicken lovers won’t even have to leave their cars.

Fried chicken lovers will no longer have to leave the comfort of their car with plans for Sydney’s first drive-through only KFC.

The popular fast food chain has proposed Kellyville Ridge in Sydney’s north west as the location of its third concept store in Australia.

The plans follow the opening of the first outlet of its kind in the world in the Newcastle suburb of Broadmeadow in November, followed by a second store in Mt Gambier, South Australia, in January.

The concept store is a glimpse into the future of fast food, with KFC stores and other chains across the country forced to close their dine-in restaurants due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a development application submitted to Blacktown Council, if approved, the store would be built on Windsor Rd, near Merriville Rd, next to an existing McDonald’s restaurant and Woolworths service station.

The $2.2 million development will not offer a traditional dine-in service, but instead have two drive through lanes and a walk up pick-up window, catering in particular for food delivery drivers.

Orders can be placed online or via an app and picked up at the drive through or pick-up window.

“There will be no internal seating area. Instead, the focus of this configuration will be takeaway orders as its primary mode of customer service,” documents read.

“The site will have vehicular access only to the drive through, staff parking or parking spaces for food delivery partner drivers, e.g. Uber Eats, who will access the pick up window to collect orders.

“Orders will not be taken via this window, only via the drive through and online.”

Planning documents show the store would operate seven days a week, from 7am to 3am.

Currently, the closest KFC outlets are in nearby Rouse Hill, less than 2km away.
