The Geographical Names Board has aksed for community feedback on the proposal by Blacktown City Council to name three new areas.

Tallawong, Nirimba Marana and Grantham Farm are the three new suburb names proposed for for the region’s northwest.

The names board is calling for community feedback on the proposal by Blacktown City Council to name its three new areas.

The names replace an initial proposal for the names Wran, Kwigan and Lynch, which were knocked back by the names board following public outcry.

The proposed suburbs incorporate parts of the existing suburbs of Schofields, Rouse Hill, Quakers Hill and Riverstone.

Names board chair Narelle Underwood encouraged residents to submit feedback on the plans.

“We are encouraging community comment before the Board considers the three proposals to name the new suburbs,” Mrs Underwood said.

“The three names are part of Blacktown City Council’s proposal to reshape suburbs in its North West Priority Growth Area.

“It’s important the new place names reflect the character and history of the local area and community.”

The name Tallawong comes from the Darug word ‘dalawang’ for the tree apple gum and incorporates the new Tallawong station and Tallawong Rd.

Nirimba Marana derives its name from the former Royal Australian Navy facility at Nirimba, which is located within the proposed new suburb area. In the Darug language, Nirimba means ‘pelican’ and Marana means ‘first’.

Grantham Farm was the name of an estate located within Riverstone/ Marsden Park, which was subdivided in 1883.

The approved names of Angus, Melonba and Richards and proposed amendments to the boundaries of Marsden Park, Rouse Hill, Shanes Park and Vineyard have been put on hold pending public exhibition of the remaining names.

A map and details of the proposal are now on display at libraries across Blacktown City. Submissions can be lodged online at www.gnb.nsw.gov.au until November 30.
