IT started off with students and staff helping others in need and has now become a powerful motivation behind Arndell Anglican College’s harvest being donated to a local charity.

Year 6 students have been working for months on their thriving vegetable garden not for themselves but for Hawkesbury Helping Hands, based in Windsor.

The Oakville college has a longstanding connection with Helping Hands, with students and staff volunteering their time and services for years.

Teacher Steven Catt, who is co-ordinating the project on behalf of the school, said there are eight students who regularly help and even provide funding out of their own pockets.

Year 6 students Thomas Simpson, Thomas Vaughan, Mitchell Vaughan, Benjamin Vaughan, James Vaughan, Dkon Dries, Thomas Horne, Jared Paton and William Hart are glad their efforts will help feed the needy.

“The last two terms, my friends and I have been growing some vegetables,” Thomas Simpson said.

“We’ve enjoyed watering them each day and watching them grow.

“We have decided to donate these crops to the Hawkesbury Helping Hands. All our vegies will be served to the homeless.

“We are happy to do this as they need it more than we do.

“Next term we will be growing some summer crop and look forward to giving them to the Hawkesbury kitchen again.”

Mr Catt said there are 25 senior students on a rotation as well as several staff who volunteer their time which is co-ordinated by Leah Thomas, the social science teacher.

“Here at Arndell Anglican College we instil in our students that serving the community in a Christ-like manner is essential,” Mr Catt said.

“Giving back to the community in this way enables the students to experience success in different ways as well as the understanding that just one or a few can make a significant difference to many.

The donation coincided with National Homelessness Week.
