A truck driver has fled the scene following an alleged hit-and-run of an elderly woman on a busy road in Sydney’s south west.

Emergency services responded to a call shortly after 10am following reports of a truck hitting a pedestrian along The Horsley Dr, near Hassall Street, Smithfield.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the truck - described as a B-double – failed to stop after hitting the woman, and was last seen travelling north along Hassall Street.

The 74-year-old woman was treated for leg injuries by paramedics at the scene, before being transported to Liverpool Hospital.

She was last reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

Traffic diversions were put in place, with The Horsley Drive expected to remain a crime scene for a considerable amount of time.

Police are urging motorists to avoid the area.
