A western Sydney cafe is serving an “appointment only” variety of coffee so exquisite it “brings people to tears”, made from beans so rare each cup costs $1500.

The Brew Lab Cafe in Penrith has sold two cups of what staff say is the “rarest coffee in Australia,” a filtered single origin variety, imported from Panama where it is grown at the base of a volcano 1700m above sea level.

Preparing the coffee involves different stages of pouring and precise measurements to extract the best possible flavours.

The brew is served black and is to be drunk with no additives or sweeteners.

The Brew Lab Cafe owner Mitchell Johnson, who regularly imports speciality and bespoke coffee varieties, says drinking the coffee is “an experience”.

“This is an after-hours experience, only served one-on-one where we close the doors and talk the person through the process,” Mr Johnson said.

“This particular coffee, you drink it as it cools down and the flavours change and evolve, giving way to tastes of peach, strawberry, lemonade, rose and juniper.”

Mr Johnson, who has drunk the brew, describes it as “phenomenal”.

“It’s an exceptional coffee, the kind of coffee that makes people cry, I know that sounds crazy but it’s happened, it’s brought them to tears.”

So coveted is this variety of coffee, 90 Plus estate has refused to name the beans or disclose the batch number in a bid to stop word from spreading beyond the underground coffee scene.

For coffee lovers seeking a caffeine experience at a less dear price point, The Brew Lab Cafe offer up another specialty variety for $200, of which it has sold seven cups and has notes of pineapple, hops and Dulce de Leche.
