A man who struck his pregnant wife following an argument about taking another woman to a medical appointment has been told to get his “priorities straight”.
Sinwan Shoukat, 31, of Penrith, pleaded guilty to common assault at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday.
The court heard during an argument Shoukat hit his pregnant wife “to the left and right hand side of the face”.
Magistrate Fiona Toose scolded the 31-year-old.
“So you’ve got a wife and a girlfriend?” she said.
“You have a wife, a son and she’s pregnant with another baby and you’ve assaulted her. That’s a problem.”
The magistrate asked why the girlfriend, who Shoukat claimed was “just a friend”, was at the location when the incident took place.
“She was just waiting for me outside because she had a medical appointment and I wanted to go with her,” Shoukat said.
The magistrate scolded the Penrith man.
“You need to get your priorities right. Do you understand that your wife is vulnerable and if you hit her you could hurt her and the baby?” she said.
Shoukat was sentenced to a 12 month community corrections order.
The 31-year-old man’s bid to vary the conditions of an apprehended violence order so he could return to the family home was also rejected.
“You’ve also lodged the application saying that you’re living in a hotel and it’s expensive which is why you want it varied,” Magistrate Toose said.
“Those are not grounds to vary an apprehended violence order.”
The apprehended violence order will be mentioned in court next month.
