What to do if you think a child is being abused

A Penrith teen assaulted a new mum and made her write a farewell letter to her children, after informing her she would be killed in two days, a court has heard.

Simone Watts-Brannan, 20, appeared in Penrith Local Court on September 30 where she pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and stalking or intimidation intending to cause fear of physical and mental harm.

Agreed police facts tendered to Penrith Local Court state that on August 12 Watts-Brannan attended a Kingswood home of a mutual friend where the victim was staying after experiencing domestic violence related issues with her boyfriend.

Falsely believing the victim had been abusing her newborn daughter Watts-Brannan punched the woman in the face, causing her to suffer bruising and swelling in her left eye.

“Oy you’re gonna have fun in two days when you get f-cking killed c-nt, look at you you ugly mutt,” Watts-Brannan told the victim.

It’s funny looking at you, you let what happened to you happen to your kids.”

After being informed by Watts-Brannan that she had been arranged to be killed, the victim was then made to sit and write a farewell letter to her children, along with notes that she would never have kids again.

Magistrate Fiona Toose was scathing in her comments, telling Brannan-Watts her crimes indicated a high level of immaturity and suggested perhaps she had been watching too much television.

Ms Toose told Brannan-Watts as she had an escalating criminal history at such a young age she ought to change her ways or she would “end up in jail for a very long time” and if she even ”makes it to the age of thirty.”

The court heard Brannan-Watts was struggling with an ice addiction at the time of offending but since her arrest has abstained from using the drug and is now back living with her mother.

Watts-Brannan was convicted and sentenced to 18-months of intensive correction in the community, during which time she is not to consume illicit drugs or alcohol.
