Sexual abuse investigation uncovers 240 victims

Investigations into the alleged sexual abuse at Daruk Training School has revealed 240 victims. Seven men have now been charged with 198 counts of alleged sexual abuse in one of the largest cases of sexual abuse in Australia.

Investigations into the alleged sexual abuse at Daruk Training School has revealed 240 victims.

Seven men have now been charged with 198 counts of alleged sexual abuse in one of the largest cases of sexual abuse in Australia.

The latest arrest was yesterday, with a 78-year-old Winmalee man who used to be a former senior juvenile justice officer at the centre charged with 24 offences against four boys, aged 14 and 15, at the now-closed school at Berkshire Park.

The alleged sexual abuse is understood to have taken place at the Daruk Training School and also Cobham Juvenile Detention Centre between 1960 and 1985.

At a press conference this morning, Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden of the Nepean Police Area Command stressed that the investigation reflected on a small number of staff at these facilities.

“What I want to emphasise is that there are a large number of people who work in these facilities providing outstanding service to the youth and a number of these people have come forward to assist in the investigation,” he said.

“We are looking at a small number of individuals in these position that have been in a position of authority and have conducted indicate intricate of abuse on individuals.”

He credited the work of Strike Force Eckersley officers which started in 2016 and was led by the Nepean Police Area Command.

“The investigators have been methodical in the way they have conducted their investigation and to date we have charged seven individuals with 198 sequences of sexual abuse,” Det Supt McFadden said.

Investigations are ongoing with further charges expected to be made.
