River Rd, Leonay: Woman dies after being hit by a car

A woman has died this afternoon after she was hit by a car while trying to cross the road near a spot popular with walkers at Leonay, in Sydney’s west.

A woman has died after being hit by a car on River Rd near a spot popular with walkers.

The CareFlight helicopter landed on the banks of the Nepean River after a 63-year-old woman went in to cardiac arrest.

Emergency services were called to River Rd, near Willow Way, at Leonay about 4.45pm on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, police found the woman on the roadway.

A NSW Police spokeswoman later confirmed the woman had died at the scene.

It is understood she was the crossing the road when she collided with a car.

The River Walk, a loop from the M4 bridge to the Yandhai pedestrian bridge is an extremely popular spot for people to exercise, even more so since social distancing measures were put in place to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Police set up a crime scene while further investigations were carried out by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

They later charged a 25-year-old man over the incident who will appear before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday.
