Exciting plans to build an indoor winter sports resort near the Nepean River is quietly picking up steam after a public exhibition late last year.
The brainchild of developer Peter Magnisalis, Winter Sports World would be an eye-catching building on the corner of Jamison Rd and Tench Ave next door to the Nepean Shores Lifestyle Community.
If approved, the development would include a 300m “advanced snow run” with real snow, a “learn to ski” run, and a “winter wonderland” children’s play area.
It would also feature an Olympic-sized ice rink for figure skating, speed skating, and ice hockey, and an area for ice climbing and mountaineer training.
There would also be a hotel with more than 100 rooms, restaurants and cafes, conference rooms, and a fine-dining restaurant with 360 degree views of the area.
According to a Winter Sports World spokesperson, the project would add almost $80 million to Penrith’s economy each year and provide almost 900 new jobs to cater for an estimated 250,000 annual visitors.
The centre would also provide training facilities for elite athletes with a goal to increase winter sports participation.
Penrith Council supports the project, and recently launched a planning proposal to amend the LEP to allow construction of the project.
The land on Tench Ave is zoned as SP3 Tourist which has a height limit of 8.5m, however Winter Sports World would require a height of 54 metres to build the ski slope.
The council also plans to improve the roads around the centre to cope with the expected increase in traffic.
Winter Sports World would quickly become the ‘jewel’ in the crown as Penrith’s well-earned title of the adventure capital of Sydney.
It would join Cables Wake Park, iFly indoor skydiving, and Penrith Whitewater Stadium as popular adventure attractions at the foot of the Blue Mountains.
Mr Magnisalis has been contacted for comment.
