A western Sydney man with a “58 page” criminal history has been sentenced for his involvement in selling drugs in jail.
Cranebrook’s Evan Maroney, 32, appeared at the Penrith Local Court via video on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to dealing with property suspected proceeds of crime.
Documents tendered to the court state on June 3 2024, a prison call was intercepted by investigators which originated from the John Moroney Correctional Centre at Berkshire Park.
The phone call, which was between two of Maroney’s five co-accused, discussing sending Maroney payment of $150 for a supply of undisclosed drugs.
One of these co-accused stated that Maroney wouldn’t supply the drugs until the money was transferred to Maroney’s partner.
Bank records from that date showed the transaction was completed and money was exchanged.
In court on Friday, Magistrate Lisa Graham was left unimpressed with Maroney’s criminal record, which had “58 pages”.
“It’s not common to have someone who managed to accomplish this while in custody,” she said.
“I find an offence such as this with a record such as this concerns me greatly … this man’s record is extensive.”
Ms Graham gave Maroney 6 month jail sentence backdated to September 4 2024.
Maroney will be released on Monday, March 3.
