An alleged facilitator of “kill cars” used in Sydney’s underworld war has been arrested, in the latest effort by police to crackdown on the city’s wealthy and dangerous organised crime syndicates.

Evan Maroney, 31, was woken early last Wednesday morning by officers attached to Taskforce Magnus who arrested and charged him with a total of 11 offences, relating to the theft of seven cars.

Police allege Maroney has been acting as something of a middle man, providing cars stolen from all across Sydney to the organised crime syndicates who then use them in murders, kidnappings and drug rips.

Maroney’s arrest came after a lengthy investigation and he was charged with offences relating to the theft of seven cars, with NSW Police Taskforce Magnus now turning its attention to two men it believes were involved in the theft and stashing of a Porsche Cayenne SUV in an unrelated car theft in Kingsford.

Taskforce Magnus commander Jason Weinstein said they have so far seized 27 “kill cars” worth more than $2 million.

“Successful Task Force Magnus proactive taskings have been pivotal to our fight against Organised Criminal Networks,” Det Ch Supt Weinstein said.

“That includes the seizure of what are becoming known as ‘kill cars’ – cars we will allege were stolen for the purpose of use in carrying out violent crimes across Sydney.

“We are not just solving the violent shootings which have preceded us, but we are actively working to stop any more from occurring.

“We know that cars are critical in organised criminal operations and that’s why we’re targeting them so fervently.”

The two men being sought by police are wanted for questioning over the theft of a Porsche Cayenne and a Dodge Ram truck, stolen from a home on Tunstall Ave in Kingsford, about 5.15am on Monday, October 23.

CCTV from Erskineville captures the two men, dressed head to toe in black tracksuit pants and hooded jumpers, parking the Porsche Cayenne on Goddard St.

They then get out of the car and walk across the street, before getting into another waiting vehicle.

Maroney’s arrest last week came as part of simultaneous search warrants in Cranebrook and Tregear, the latter being a raid on the alleged car facilitator’s home.

Police allegedly located car and house keys, a stolen Yamaha motorcycle, electronics, knives and poles, they believe are to be used as weapons.

All items were seized to undergo further forensic examination.

Maroney was taken to Penrith Police Station before facing Penrith Local Court last Thursday, where he made no application for bail and it was formally refused.

He is next set to next face court on Friday, January 19 2024.
