Emergency services have descended on a western Sydney watering hole – desperately searching for a man who vanished after jumping into the Nepean River south of Penrith.
Police, paramedics and Fire and Rescue were called to Nortons Basin at Mulgoa, about 20km south of Penrith, about 11am, after a man – aged 58 – reportedly disappeared after jumping into the water from a cliff.
Police have been told the man had been fishing before telling his partner he was going for a swim.
She raised the alarm when he failed to resurface.
A search operation is now underway involving officers from Nepean Police Area Command, specialist members of State Emergency Services’ (SES) swift-water rescue team, Fire and Rescue NSW, and NSW Ambulance.
Police were seen huddled around the wife of the missing man, comforting her before another family member arrived on scene.
Sergeant Aaron Lindsey confirmed the man not been found.
“At about 11am today a 58-year-old male entered the water at Nortons Basin and shortly after entering the water while fishing he became submerged under the water and failed to resurface,” he said.
“This triggered a multi agency response led by NSW police, Fire and Rescue NSW, SES and rural fire service.”
“The search is on going. The family are aware and were on site at the time the male entered the water.”
