Glenmore Park man charged over alleged online grooming

A western Sydney man who allegedly groomed who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl for sex has been granted bail.

Luke Christopher Jones, 37, of Glenmore Park, made an application for bail before Penrith Local Court after he was charged with using carriage service to groom a minor for sex and two counts of using a carriage service to send indecent material to a minor.

Investigators from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad’s Child Exploitation Unit began speaking to Jones in July last year.

In a statement, police say they will allege in court that Jones believed he was speaking to a 14-year-old girl and engaged in sexually explicit conversations about acts he wished to perform on her.

He was arrested at a Glenmore Park home about 6:40pm on Thursday. Detectives searched the home and a South Penrith business where electronic items were seized for examination.

Magistrate Stephen Corry granted Jones bail on the conditions he live at Glenmore Park, not go within 50m of a childcare centre or school, surrender his passport and not go near or try to contact anyone under 18, except his own children.

He is also not to access any device capable of accessing the internet.

Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective acting superintendent Gordon Arbinja said the arrest should serve as a warning.

Luke Christopher Jones will face Penrith Local Court again in late April.

“Police will allege in court that this man believed he could engage in sexual activity with a 14-year-old child,” he said.

“This is also another reminder for parents and carers to be aware of what their children are doing on the internet and especially who they are speaking with.”

Jones will return to court in April.
